Happy New Year’s everyone. Hope everyone had a fun time bringing in the new year with your family and friends. I know we stayed in and had a family game night with many goodies to eat. Now it is January 2nd and I am sure a lot of people made New Year’s resolutions. Some of you may have made a resolution to lost weight or stop smoking or practice your golf game more. I heard Lou Holtz say on the Golf Channel about making one decision and stick with it at the start of the year. He said “quitting is a permanent solution to a temporary problem”. Good advice from Lou, I really like listening to him.
So why not try and pick one resolution this year and stick with it. Don’t let yourself quit when it gets hard. Don’t quit if people tell you it isn’t possible. Anything could be possible if you work at it hard enough. The most successful people in the world I would bet had plenty of times things went wrong for them but they didn’t quit, they kept working at reaching their goal.
Golf for instance is a great example of how someone could give up when things may not be going their way. You may want to hit your Driver longer and straighter but after hours on the range you are not seeing your results. Then you think it must be the Driver so you go and buy yourself a new Driver. You take your new Driver to the range and you get the same results as your last Driver.
Some golfers may quit using a Driver or they may even be frustrated enough to quit golfing. But then someone gives you some tips from improving your grip or swing plan and then all of a sudden you start hitting your Driver longer and straighter. Good thing you didn’t give up.
A Golf Pro gave me some advice that helped me when playing in Golf tournaments and using my Driver. I told him I was having a tough time off the tee day to day and not knowing what each day would bring. Some days I hit a slice, some a hook and some straight depending on the day. He said think of the fairway as a three lane highway. He said after you hit your first drive and lets say you hit it to the right, then the next tee shot pick the left lane. Good advice that helped my game.
So this year instead of making several resolutions why not just make one for the year and stick with it. Give it your best shot for you to be successful in reaching it. Now go enjoy your next round of golf, enjoy your time with your friends on the golf course and enjoy the views. Golf should not feel like work, it should be fun and enjoyment in your life.
