Asking for deals or for a cash discount isn’t always very easy for a lot of people. My parents never talked about this subject when I was a kid and I don’t remember ever hearing them ask for a deal or a discount. Now I think about all the money they could have saved during their life time.
Seth and Logan, I hope they will take the Mills Way to Financial Freedom rules that we teach them and use them in the future. Then hopefully they will continue on and teach their kids the rules also.
The kids have probably been embarrassed at times in the past when we have asked for a deal, discount, coupon or a cash discount. But the older they are getting hopefully they are seeing the value of money and how hard they have to work to earn the amount of money they are wanting to spend.
Logan is working two jobs, one in the school cafeteria where he works the morning shift and the lunch shift. Logan also is working at a local grocery store at night for about 20 to 30 hours a week. Seth is working in the school cafeteria where he will start getting paid money in a few weeks once he turns 14 years old.
Seth on Podcast
Seth on our podcast today told of three different times he has asked for a deal and saved money each time. We know that isn’t real life and isn’t always going to happen but it doesn’t hurt to ask for a deal or a savings. It only takes a few seconds and the worst thing they can say is “NO”.
I have saved so much money over the years I wish I could tell you a total amount of money. I know once we moved to Arizona, we saved $500 in some work I had done at the house just asking for a cash discount. Since a business would have to pay Credit Card fees and a hassle of that process. The other way I could have paid them was with a Check but they wouldn’t know for sure if it would clear the bank and more hassle and possible cost to them. But Cash in there had is king and they have no expense or risk in that.
Seth in Mexico
Seth when we were in Mexico a few weeks ago he got a discount on a bracelet that he had made for him and on two Monster Energy drinks he bought at a local store there. He got three items for the amount of money that if he spent it on the Cruise ship he would probably only had enough for one Monster drink. He was a happy boy that day when he got the discounts.
This is one of the Mills Way to Financial Freedom rules that we teach our boys. Seth has been listening pretty well it seems. I still need to encourage the boys a little bit some of the time. I hope it will become natural to them in the future.
The bracelet and Monster drinks were not needed for sure and that is a subject for another day. Needless to say, I was a happy dad when Seth got his deals that day and how excited he was. We tried to do a live recording at the time but my phone messed up somehow.
Have you saved money before by asking for deals, discounts or coupons? If so do you always ask for deals when you are out?
Last week Darlene and myself was in Kohls getting her something for work and she asked for any coupons they had going on at the register. Hopefully our boys heard her asked. We try to take them when ever we go shopping and especially when we shop for Houses and Cars since those are some of the largest purchases they may make in their adult years.
There has been many times in my past where I paid for something and forgot to ask for a deal. Ughhh.. I am not perfect and have made plenty of dumb money mistakes over the years. That is the reason I started the Mills Way to Financial Freedom rules so we could teach our boys things that could help them in the future. Hopefully they will make less or smaller money mistakes then we did.
Cars to Hobbies
Cars to hobbies cost me a lot of money in my first 20 years of my money-making years. If I could only go back in time and follow the rules. We would have millions on top of millions of dollars for sure. Plus, with that kind of Financial Freedom we would have so many more choices today then we currently have.
We are not the normal family that is in debt, owes on a house with little retirement savings. We are the weird ones with no debt, the house is paid off, emergency fund is done, kids college plan is done since we are giving them each a used car and a place to live while in college. Plus, our retirement accounts are healthy, not funded completely but doing well. Darlene will probably still work for the next 22 years at a job for health insurance. I will probably do this to the day I die because I have a passion for helping others with money, family and kid issues.
