Check Receipts for Errors

We just showed the boys again today how we were over charged at the store. It was only $4.20 on that trip but like we told them that $4.20 if it happened each week it would add up to $218.40 in one year.

We had a time with the boys that four out of six stops in a row we were over charged. We were wanted to be undercharged to show them how to be ethical and let the store know you owe them money. But that hasn’t happened yet when the boys have been shopping with them.

We stressed to them to check all receipts on anything they ever buy in their lifetime. This goes for all repairs that they ever pay for. We told them to look at how much they were over charged and then figure how many hours they would have to work to pay for that amount.

You may not think it happens often but it does. I know the Customer Service department at some of our stores we shop at a lot know us well. Darlene and myself grew up basically in retail and management jobs so we probably watch pricing better than most people do.

To be Financially Free I feel we need to not only to save and invest our money but we also need to not lose money when we don’t need to. I know all Investments can go up or down and we could lose on them but with what we purchase we can control what we are willing to spend.

Same goes for asking for deals. We taught the boys that and then told them that even when people said they would give us a deal to make sure that you get the deal. We have had many times that we were told that we would be getting a deal and they forgot to give us the discount.

Sometimes their website pricing doesn’t always match what we have been charged also from different companies. Most of the companies honored the lowest price and some didn’t. They said it was a mistake on line. Then we decided not to buy the items to show the boys how to say “NO” and stick with what you are willing to pay for something.

Of course, if it is a need then you may not have a choice but to pay for it. We have though had a time with a Utility company that made a mistake on our bill and we called them to get it fixed. It wasn’t that easy to get it fixed, we were transferred to three different people and on the phone for over 40 minutes but we got the bill corrected. The boys thought I was crazy again for not just paying the bill.

We keep showing them live examples of when we are over charged and how we handled getting the price corrected. We hope when they are adults that they learned from us and won’t just let it go.

I wish I had a total amount of money saved over the years to tell you this massive amount of money to make it sound super exciting. But I really feel that easily we have saved thousands of dollars over the years. Think how much thousands of dollars could have grown to. Even using the 72 rile that at 12% your money would double ever 6 years. Then $5,000 saved could grow to $260,000 in 30 years in a made-up world.

Still a good example for us to try to show the boys how important it is to make sure they don’t over pay for anything in their lifetime. It is tough enough with all the temptations they will face to spend money over their lifetime but why should they over spend more.

The older I get I talk to more people that are retired or want to retire someday realize that we only have so many income earning years left and how precious money is. So why waste it on being over charged.

Money Tree

Our boys think money grows on trees and it drives me nuts. Then I think back when I was a kid and I was probably the same way. I wasted so much money on vehicles and fun activities without any worries of finding more money. If I could only go back and talk to my 14-year-old self. Who knows, I may not even have even listed to my older self. When we are young, we probably think we know it all.

Our 18-year-old has no savings in the bank. He will be graduating High School in five months and then be heading off to college. Remember how I said he has no savings in the bank. But yet he went out and bought a Nintendo Switch, a new game for it, memory card and a carrying case for it for a total of $550. Lord help me. LOL

Choices and Consequences, right? If they don’t make sure they are not over paying for stuff, buying wants they can’t afford, spending money they don’t have, not saving for Financial Freedom then the consequence could be they will be working until they so old that they can’t work anymore. Their friends could be retired and wanting them to travel with them but they won’t be able too because they have to work.

What do you want your retirement years to look like? Do you want to be Financially Free or still be working? I am not going to give you any magic solution to get rich quick. Bottom line I have over 50 Mills Way to Financial Freedom rules that we covered with our boys so hopefully they won’t waste as much money during their lifetime. I hope they spend less than they make, stay debt free and save 25% or more of the money they make during their lifetime.

What are your thoughts? How often do you find items not ringing up the correct price? Do you check your receipts or bills? If not maybe do a study for a year and see what it adds up too.
