Money VS Experiences can be a hot topic for some people. But it is something to think about especially if you are not set to retire by age 60 with your retirement savings or you are in your 50’s and have a ton of debt.
Try to imagine a couple that is all about how important it was for them to go to concerts or events each weekend. They like to travel throughout the year and live in a house too large for them. Guess what… they have a lot of debt also. I am sure you know many people like this.
We were looking through photo books from just five years ago and both the boys didn’t remember going to the Nebraska Zoo and barely remembered anything from the Chicago trip. Our trip to Nationals Golf Tournament for a whole week four years ago they barely remember. Were those trips worth the cost or not?
Seth and myself went to a Football game this week. Will he remember it in four years or not? We went to a Vikings game three years ago and the boys seem to barely remember it. Was it worth it? The things my wife and myself remember was it took us an hour and a half to get out of the parking lot and also how long the lines were for the restrooms. Plus, the uncomfortable seats. Seth said he didn’t like having to ask people if he could walk out our row to go get something to eat. So, was it worth it? My wife and myself wanted to take them to each thing once for the experience for them to have. But overall, we would rather sit on our comfy Sofa and watch the game at home. Eat our cheap food and use our clean restroom. Plus, free parking at home in a garage. LOL
As you know Mrs. RE and myself are both debt free. We have our house and cars paid off. We have money in our retirement accounts. I have been pretty much semi-retired for the last four years and she works at an hourly job. We live with in our budget and our last month we had another record Net Worth.
We budget some vacations and experiences throughout the year for the boys and us. We want to give them some memories but with in our budget. We also have an eating out budget and movies but which we live within. We watch 90% of our movies on Netflix.
What do you do? Do you have a budget for all expenses for yourself and family? Are you debt free? If you have a house Mortgage then you are not debt free. Do you have an emergency fund? Are you funding your retirement plan with each pay check? If you need help with hitting your financial or family goals let me know.
We try to ask our self when spending money “Is it a Need or a Want?”. There are so many things that can attract you to spend money on like – Out for drinks after work, concerts, movies, trips, vacations, cars, houses, furniture, parties, top golf, hobbies, donations and more. Do you think about saving first or spending first?
The people that I know that save first are all financially stable and their kids seem to have a good financial mind and also practice saving money first.
Here is a positive quote I like; “Accentuate the Positive, Eliminate the Negative, Latch on the Affirmative, Don’t mess with Mr. In-between” by Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen (Accentuate the positive)
