We teach the boys that it is OK to change their Financial Goals plan along the way. That things will come up and goals or plans will change and to accept the change.
As always, I am not giving you any Financial Advice and you should seek advice from your Professional Advisors to see what is best for your situation. See my Disclaimer at MillsWay.com. This is for entertainment only.
For example, if they are single and make up their Financial Freedom goals and plans there are many changes that could come into play during their lifetime that can change their plans and goals drastically.
Here are some examples that could come up for our boys;
- They could get married. Then they would come up with new plans and goals that work for the two of them.
- They could have kids of their own. Then they would have a huge change in their lifestyle and budget which could affect their plans and goals.
- They may have a large Medical Expense. Think if you had a large out of pocket bill of $50,000 and how that could affect your plans.
- They could encounter Job loss. Some people it takes over 12 months to find a new job. A person could burn through a lot of savings until they get a new job.
- They could encounter some major home repairs. Homes are expensive and repairs can add up. New Heating and Air Condition unit could run $5,000 to $10,000 depending on the size or a new Roof could run $10,000 to $20,000 depending on the size and type of your roof. Plus, things wear out around your house and need replaced. For instance, to have a Water Heater replaced with installation can run around $1,000. We factor in projected costs of home ownership into our plans.
The list could go on and on of things that could come up and alter their original plans and goals towards Financial Freedom. It could take them longer to hit their goals and they would need to accept the new time lines.
The choice is always there depending on what they encounter on if they try to increase their income coming in or to reduce other expenses to cover the new ones. The other choice is it could take them longer to hit their Financial Freedom goals. It will be what ever they choose to do.
Darlene and myself in just the last ten years we have gone through a lot of changes. We have had many different job changes. We have worked for different companies. We quit our jobs and moved from the Midwest to Arizona. I retired to work on our Passive Income Streams, we bought a house in Arizona, Logan got a Driver’s license and now he is in the Navy. Seth is eating a ton of food now. LOL
As you can see, we have had many changes for us in the last ten years and we just keep rolling along with them and adjust our plans and goals as things come up.
Years back when I was talking to a College professor, he said that many college students will change their area of study many times during their college years. He also said a lot of people won’t even be in the career that they went to college for. He thought the average college graduate would change jobs anywhere from 5 to 10 times in their lifetime. Changing jobs that many times in their lifetime isn’t always for the best. Sometimes they make less than the previous job, sometimes they make the same and sometimes they make more. Making less can affect your plans you may have.
A job recruiter said that a person when they are out of work could be looking for work over 12 months. That could mess up a person plans if they had no income coming in for 12 months.
She also said that over 25% of people change jobs every 12 months. Wow. That is crazy. She is probably right on or a little low. Darlene works in the Retail world currently and sees a lot of turnover.
Logan back when he had a job in High School wanted to quit his job and work for another company because he heard they paid a $1 an hour more. We had to explain to him that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side and that he may get less hours there, which would equal less weekly pay. He never quit his job. He stayed their till he went into the Navy.
Do you have plans and goals for Financial Freedom? What life changes have you faced that changed your plans or goals timeline?
We want the boys to understand that life happens and their plans and goals could be affected. They need to be able to accept the change and revise their plans. They may keep the same goals but may have to change the plans to be able to achieve their goals.
